Short a profits warning

One thing you must remember: spread betting gives you the chance to short, so do look out for opportunities, especially profit warnings. It’s amazing how one warning can often lead to a couple of others – so if you see a company which has put out something negative, keep an eye on the price. You’re looking for a warning that might affect the share for a while rather than perhaps a one-off news event.

New issues

Sometimes new shares come onto the market – see The Naked Trader for a whole chapter on these. It can be worth spread betting these as well as buying them as normal shares, if you like the look of the company. Quite often new entrants do very well in their first few weeks of trading, so why not consider spread betting one?

The thing to watch for is that the share in question might not be available to deal online on its first day of trading, as the spread bet firms may not have set them up yet. But it should only take a phone call to get a quote.

Also, and even better, sometimes a spread bet firm will quote a new issue before it has been listed, in a kind of grey market in its shares. So you can sometimes get in a week before flotation! I’ve done this a couple of times. Anyway, it’s something worth thinking about.
